Proposed Jun. 6, 2020

The Kansas City Police Department costs almost a quarter of a billion dollars per year to run, with results that have put Kansas City under national scrutiny. I propose that Kansas City take the lead in a growing movement to disband the police as an institution, and save money in the process. From there, funds can be allocated to social services and economic growth.
The KCPD are simply not effective as a force for social good, being an agency that was primarily created to respond with violence. Why do we then expect police to be social workers and mental health professionals? What if instead we had actual social workers and community builders to make our city safer and stronger together? I believe this would bring Kansas City into the forefront of history.
We can do better, let Kansas City lead

Improved management and equitable discipline/punishment for criminal acts committed by police officers (and looters!), but we need law enforcement to keep us safe. More rigorous training, to include extensive training on de-escalation, negotiation, community service and ethical conduct, as well as HIGHER pay, would attract and develop a better, more mature police force.

Who would the average citizen call for a robbery, assault in progress, vandalism, battery, stolen car, violent attack or other crime related instance where we rely on the KCPD today? Disband and replace with County law enforcement like in Camden, NJ?
